I have done few barn painting this spring and I am always amazed at the shapes and sizes of the barns I find. Michigan barns are a symbol of our agricultural heritage. A day of Plien Air Painting

As I suspected this morning the day was wonderful for plien air painting. The morning was sunny with out a cloud in the sky.

Everyone found an interesting spot to paint and the fun began.These girls found some shade as the sun came out the day grew warmer.

The was a wonderful pond on the grounds and the reflections in the early morning were perfect. Later in the morning the clouds came in and added another note of interest to the reflective water.

The artist sat up on the hill with an umbrella to paint the pond. As the clouds came in the wind picked up and took her lovely painter umbrella right into the deep end of the pond. I never use an umbrella because I have never seen one survive for long in the wind.

There was a flag on the hill next to the house. I walked around it trying to find an interesting angle to paint from because I had been thinking how I would like to paint a flay for the Fourth of July and voila there it was. I have painted some cupcakes in the past and few beach divas in red white and blue but this year I wanted something with a flag.

Figurative art

I use a lot of yellow ochre in my paintings. The earth colors are my favorite color choice. Every artist must exclude as well as include colors in their color pallet.

Ochre is an iron oxide and was the first color paint. It has been used on every inhabited Continent since painting began. The word "Ochre" come from Greek meaning "pale yellow", Ochres can be redder,or browner,and very earthy?

Figurative Oil Painting

I am still working on getting the skin tones right in my figurative paintings. I still don't have the mix the way I want it. I am using white,cadmium yellow,yellow ochre cadmium red,burnt sienna,burnt umber and sometimes a little viridian green or ultramarine blue. I found this little You Tube video that was helpful. I will try his method of mixing next time and see if I get a warmer skin tone.

A Walk in the Rain

I have been collecting pictures of umbrellas to start a series of oil paintings. I must have a folder that is is an inch thick but I still don't feel like things have gotten firm in my mind as the direction I would like to take this theme. In today's paintings" A Walk in the Rain" I just wanted to try to catch that wet look. I am still playing with the idea of umbrellas but I'm not ready to start on it yet.

Window Flowers

The light from the window in this painting is behind the flowers and creates a nostalgic feeling in this oil painting. There is a lot to catch the eye as the oranges roll around and the white water pitcher sits to the side.The colors are muted to add to the feeling. I like the painting that Nancy Median a fellow daily painter did of Glads by a window her colors were bold and bright and give so much life to her painting. I think I use brighter colors when I work in in watercolors.

Plien Air Painting

This is one of the many wonderful views available at Hidden Lake Gardens. The Gardens is indeed like squares on a quilt, a paradise in a park, where there are engagement and playful fun, an escape from the everyday world.

The group of artist from the Jackson Michigan Civic Artist Group,that meets every Tuesday to paint somewhere in Michigan start to get ready for the critic.Today we had about 8 painters. It is a loose formed group all are welcome. We boost several very fine pastel artist, a few watercolors, oil painters, and a sketch artist.

One of the pastels set up for the critic.

I did two paintings when I painted at hidden lakes this is the other one. We paint until 12:30 then take a lunch break and critic our work then if you have time we go back and paint a little more.

June Morning

I finally got back to some plien air painting yesterday morning.I try to do at least one a week in the summer but I have been slow starting this year and have had a few that just weren't even good enough to show in public but I have not given up. It had rained all night but the day turned out hot and sunny. I found a nice shady area under some old trees to paint with the help of a few very friendly misquotes. What I found interesting was the shadow pattern under this tree and I tried to capture it. One of the daily painters who is an excellent plien air artist is Tom Brown , someday I hope to have his talent in the open air.

Martini with Olives No.2

The martini cocktail is a drink associated with power, class, and of course James Bond. But its roots go much further back than that, to a drink very different from what's commonly found in today's 'Martini Bars'. The term 'martini' seems to be replacing 'cocktail' in common usage, so now there are hundreds of 'martini' recipes from classic martinis, flavored vodka martinis, dessert martinis to modern/trendy varieties that resemble the classic martini only in the type of glass used.






Martini with olive No.2 is painted in oils. I have a series of Martini paintings and thought that I would add the olives that I have been playing with lately to the mix. It seemed to be a good fit.

The serenity of Iris'

I haven't given up on the olive paintings. I have 2 that I am working on right now. Today I took a break and painted an Iris. I have painted many Iris in the past.When ever I paint an Iris I think of Van Gogh. He painted so many lovely pictures of Iris and never sold one of his Iris paintings while he lived. Maybe he painted them because they are so calm and fragile.

Working with Olives in a still life

I am still playing around with the dots and olive theme. I keep rolling these little olives around in my mind but still haven't pushed the idea I am working with to where I want it to be yet. I have several others paintings of olives that I have started and I will keep working on the idea. I like the feel that I am getting with them but I am still working out a color grouping that I am happy with. I have been arranging tones and establishing relationships.What I pair the colors with completely changes the views experience. Green next to yellow has a totally different feel then green next to blue or brown. The key to remember is there are no bad colors combinations, only bad proportions.
