Single Sunflower
Sunflower Seeds
Watercolor painting of sunflower seeds and a little information on the use of sunflower seeds, after all all those wonderful flowers start here.
For commercial purposes sunflower seeds are classified by the pattern on the seed husk.If they are solid black they are used for oil and bird feed.If the Hull is striped like the ones I have painted they are used for food because they are low in oil content.Sunflower seeds can be sprouted and used in salads.
Sunflower sprouts are produced using the methods one would use for most seeds. Begin with hulled seeds, soak overnight in water. Then drain off the loose inner hulls (important!), and put the soaked seed in the sprouting environment - jars, cloth, or commercial sprouter, for about 1 day. Removing the inner hulls is very important, as if left in, they will spoil and ruin your batch of sprouts. The sprouting environment can be glass jars with plastic screen lids (propped up at 45 degree angle), or the seed can be placed between damp cotton washcloths, on flat-bottomed bowls or saucers.

Poppies and Sunflowers
I started this painting some time ago and got it back out a few days ago and started working on it again. Sometimes if you back away from something you are working on for awhile and come back to it you find just the right colors to make it work.When I started the painting I had been reading "The Yellow House" by Martin Gayford , a story of Vincent Van Goghs last few years and the two months that he and Paul Gauguin spent living and painting in Arles while living in a yellow house.
The sunflowers are for Vincent and the tiny figure going down the dirt road on foot is Vincent headed out for day of painting his beloved sunflowers.

About This Painting: This painting was done in plien air near Adrian Michigan. This farm is a crop farm with no livestock, but it still has the big barn and silo. When I was a kid one of my morning chores was to feed the cows from the silo. You had to climb all the way up to the top and let me tell you, when you are a kid that's a long high way up. Dad left the pitch fork up there so all you had to do was climb down inside and shovel the silage out. Now when the silage got down almost to the next door it was hard to crawl up and out.

Once again the first of the month theme is here. For the first wednesday of June - June 3 - the theme for the daily painters is 'All Cracked Up'. Any variation on the theme is fine - humor, literal cracks, or whatever. So I decided to paint something growing out of the cracks. I am always amazed when I go into the flower beds or my garden and find something so tightly rooted in a small crack in the rocks. As I went out looking a saw this strawberry plant down in the crack of the rocks that make up the boarder of the flower bed. A strawberry had sent out a runner and this is where it had decided to root.
