About This Painting: Every year when I was a child we would pick Lilac and Iris and put them in fruit jars because that is what we had. This was how we made our bouquets to take to the grave yard and put near the markers of family and friends. Dad would take us to each grave and tell us about out great great grandfather or great uncle and all the wonderful things he remember about them. Today I paint this picture and remember.

Wild Raspberries No 2
Every time I went out to work in the garden today it would start to thunder black clouds would come in and the rain would drown me. I would run for the house, start a new project and in about half an hour the sun would come out. I repeated this madness three times and gave up when it started hailing the last time.I figured after all that exercise of running for cover it was time to relax in the studio and get down to some serious painting. I started the large pasture cow painting that I had been doing work up studies on today but I warmed up with small wild raspberry painting to get the creative juices flowing.

Every week Daily Paintworks has a challenge, something to make you think out side the box. Every instructor I have ever had has had us do this weeks challenge, oil were to paint on a burnt umber ground, wipe it down to a mid value, paint in the darks, and wipe out for lights (with paper towel or q-tips - try dipping in mineral spirits for the really white stuff). Use ONLY burnt umber (or raw umber if that’s all you have) - no white!!!

I have been having such funposting to the challenges. It is so amazing to see the same subject painted through 200 sets of eyeballs each week! I LOVE seeing the diversity and the thought that has gone into each painting. This week you've got a choice.
Either paint the cat... or the kaboodle. In both cases, please feel free to be creative, however paint from the photos. Otherwise your entry will not be accepted.
Cats sleep 16 hours a day - I think that qualifies as a "still life" For those who are "allergic" to cats, you can paint the tools of the trade cat toys photo as an alternative still life. Hope to see a lots of fur flying over this challenge!

About This Painting: I love cats and have two in my studio but I never feel like I get it right when I paint them so this challenge really put me to the test. I think I may have noodle the fur a little too much. I really believe that the only way to get better is to keep trying so I will give cats a little more work and see if I get the feel I am looking for.

Wyoming Cows
This is a small study that I have done for a larger painting.
A "study" is the term used for a practice piece, a quick painting done to capture the essence of a subject or scene, or a painting done to try out a composition, rather than a painting done as a final piece. A study can include the entire composition or just a small section.
Here I am looking for how much I want to put in the larger painting. I think I will do at least one more study before I start the larger work. This is a 5x7 painting the larger painting will be 20x24.

The Red High Heels
I spent the week end in Clair Michigan hoping to do a few days of Plein Air painting. It was 75 when I left and sunning when I got to Clair it was raining and 50. By the end of the week it was 45 and still raining so what started out as a Plein Air weekend end up as a wonderful group still life session. This is one of the painting I did over the weekend. The company was wonderful and the food was great.

This weeks Challenge at Daily Paint Works was paint Your Vegetables by Diane Mannion.
Pick a vegetable and paint it from life. Direct painting. Take a break from those photos for now. Not only will this be good practice but healthy too. Really look at your subject, study it closely and you'll see colors and shapes you never noticed before. Have fun with it and when you're finished... eat your subject. Then reward yourself with a good long walk. And pick something along the way for your next subject.
I picked up a bunch of asparagus or "spargrass" as my brother used to call it and placed it on a canning jar for this still life.

Green Pear
Green Pear is the third painting in my small green series.
Green is not merely a mixture of blue and yellow, but also other colours. The introduction of violet, crimson or burnt sienna will tone down green dulling it into a more harmonious color.Shadows beneath green objects can be suggested by the introduction of green’s complimentary color, which is any colour in the red spectrum; violet, permanent rose or cadmium red will add richness to shadows.

Chubby Bird and Pussy Willow
I worked in the yard most of the day and about 3 o'clock the sun finally came out. I usually start painting at 8 Am but is has been so cold and rainy here that I had to take advantage of the good weather. I didn't get into the studio until 7PM but I got my daily painting done. I am working on 2 larger painting but the brush never touch the canvas on those. Someday I need to be three people.
