The Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula
The Upper Peninsula, painting by Delilah Smith

About This Painting:
The Upper Peninsula

The romance and lure of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is reflected in the ethnic mix of our people and historic towns, born of mining and forestry that opened the north country to settlement more than 150 years ago.
There are a few ghost towns in the Upper Peninsula, but hundreds more in Michigan. Most of them grew up along a railroad and around a small sawmill or mine. They flourished for awhile, then languished and died when the timber was gone and the ore ran out and the railroad stopped running.
