Working with this still life gave me a few new challenges. First there was the curve of the table, then the foreshortening of the melon slice to deal with. The star of the show the honeydew came out wonderful. Not every painting is a success so when you get one right you must celebrate your wins.

Farm House ,Plein air landscape painting

About This Painting: I painted this old house "en Plein Air ",it is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes Historical park located in Michigan.

My painting method is to put paint down and leaving it. I don't mush it in. I like thick bold strokes. To help me I use a toned canvas this keeps me from having to “kill the white” over the entire surface before I can make sound, relative judgments about color and value.

Avocado: Slicing this creamy vegetable in half and removing the seed I knew I wanted to paint the seed as much as the avocado.Avocados are as creamy as the oils that I paint them with so I took a few dollops of thick creamy paint and put them on the seed.Rough texture in the skin is in such contract to the soft texture creamy inside making for an interesting composition.

Watermelon for Sale

I painted this work at a plein air paint out in Dexter Michigan last week. It rained the first part of the week and was over cast making it very challenging. When there was a break in the clouds I finally got to paint a little but people kept parking right in front of my easel even though the rest of the parking are was empty Those are just some of the challenges of the Plein air painter.
