About This Painting: I had a collector Contact me about a small floral painting that I had done and asked if I had something larger like it. I didn't so I was inspired to paint another one larger. When I started to paint the inspiration was the smaller work but this one took in a life of it's own and really is nothing like the smaller one. I will try again in a few days. I really like the feel of this painting. It has lots of texture in it.

A Winter Day, Painting realistic snow

About This Painting:

Painting realistic snow is always a challenge.

There is always a slight bit of subsurface scattering going on in snow, even on overcast days, this softens transitions between light and shadow and gives the snow a tinge of the hue from whatever local color is affecting it.

I am painting a warm morning sun coming up over the snow cover trees.

Where the sunlight hits snow, it spreads out in almost in a prismatic effect, the shadow areas pick up the light of the sky color and reflections from sunlit areas. So you can see the warm orange tint that I have used in the lower area of the sky reflected in the snow.

Because of all of these effects snow is never pure white except where you have a direct highlight from the sun. I personally try to avoid using pure white in winter painting s as much as possible.

When you are in a position to actually see the highlights, you quickly realize how much relatively darker the rest of the snow is even in the lit areas.

We do not have snow here in Michigan yet but I feel it coming burrrrr.

Morning Palms , Tropical Landscape

The last few mornings I have slept in and been slow about posting my work. Bad habits are hard to break so I had better get back on track today. I have worked late in the studio and I have had a lot of help.

Baby is cutting teeth, to bad it is on the artist.

So no going to bed until the work is posted. I have someone watching me to make sure I do it.

One thing leads to another in painting

Reindeer and Christmas Owl

About This Painting: One thing leads to another when I start painting. Last week I painted an owl. He was a cute chubby little guy.

I liked the way the whimsical little guy turned out so I thought I should do a few more: So I then painted a small aceo owl only 3.5 x 2.5, I played around with the look of the feathers.

I liked the way it's feathers had a fluffy look to them and I think I will try to get this feel in a larger work but something about the branch got me thinking about reindeer( a little ADCD) . I forgot about the feathers for the moment and wanting to start to think Reindeer. I wanted a few Christmas paintings and that lead me to the Reindeer and the Christmas Owl.

And because I was up all night painting I started thinking about being a Night owl and how I need friends that were night owls also which turned into this painting:
