Michigan Sky, landscape by Delilah
About This Painting:Most artist paint the sky before the land, working from top to bottom. I always start at the top and putting in a base of color then paint the landscape and near the end go back add more color and clouds.
I start with a thumb nail sketch with some color notes so later if I want to do a larger work in the studio I have more detail.
I also take photos to go back to later in the studio if I want to paint something more detailed.
I start blocking in some local color. I always use a toned canvas so I am not looking at white.

I mix up lots of paint.
I sketch in where I want things in transparent red oxide. This will be painted over so no detail.
Put in the row of trees.
I add the distant grass.
Put in the last of the local color.
Put the sun hitting the tops of the trees and finish the sky.
