Pink Poppies

I think I was in the pink mode today painting pink poppies.

The earliest citations of 'in the pink' are from the 16th century and, at that time, the meaning was 'the very pinnacle of something', but not necessarily limited to health. The earliest example that I can find of pink being used with that meaning is from 1597 Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, 1597:
Mercurio: Why, I am the very pinke of curtesie.

The earliest citation I've found for 'in the pink' is from Leigh's Kensington Gardens, 1720:
"'Tis the Pink of the Mode, to marry at first Sight: - And some, indeed, marry without any Sight at all."
The 'pink of the mode', i.e. the acme of excellence of fashion, was a common early usage and continued to be used throughout the 19th century.

About This Painting:

I was painting on the shore of Lake Michigan, between rain storms for the wet paint fund raiser at the Tvedten Gallery in Harbor Springs. The fund raiser was for the little Traverse Conservancy and Watershed council paintings will be on display until the end of Aug.

Just Peachy

For those of you who know me, you know I live on ice cream and there is nothing like fresh peach ice cream.

Peach Ice Cream
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 cups milk
4 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons vanilla
4 cups whipping cream
2 1/2 cups crushed or pureed peaches, sweetened to taste

Preparation:Combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt in top of double boiler; gradually blend in milk. Cook over hot water, stirring occasionally, for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until thickened. Stir a small amount of the hot mixture into the beaten eggs, then return egg mixture to pan with remaining hot mixture. Cook over hot water, stirring constantly, for 4 to 5 minutes, until it is about as thick as pudding. Chill thoroughly, about 3 hours. Stir vanilla and cream into the chilled mixture. Pour into a 1-gallon ice cream freezer; freeze according to manufacturer's directions. Remove dasher and stir in crushed or pureed sweetened peaches; repack ice cream freezer with 1 part rock salt to 6 parts crushed ice and let ripen for 2 hours.

About This Painting:The use of the word flip-flop for thong sandals is a modern term dating from the 1960’s that describes what is probably the oldest form of footwear still being worn (the term flip flap has been used in various echoic senses since 1529).1 Flip flops have been around for at least six thousand years. As a point of comparison, primitive shoes are shown in rock paintings dating from the late Paleolithic (Stone Age) period some 15,000 years ago. There are depictions of flip flops in ancient Egyptian murals on tombs and temples from about 4,000 B.C.
