Your Guide to Stress Free Oil Painting

How I did this painting:

I like to start with a tinted canvas because I do some scrumbling in my painting so it's nice to have an interesting color in the under painting.

Scumbling / Glazing is a method of applying very thin layers to the painting. It is effective for very smooth gradations, and also for adjusting dried layers. It can be used to great advantage to manipulate the reflective or absorptive light qualities inherent in pigments.Scumbling and Glazing are transparent painting techniques.

I draw a lose sketch of my main objects and shapes.

I add color to the backgroud and the dark shadows.

The nice thing about oils is that you build the color from darks to lights and if something doesn't work out just scrape it off and continue.

I keep working on the bird. I want to develop it nice round shape.

I start adding the feather to the at little bird. There is a lot of value to painting the same subject in many different ways. You start to think what it is about the subject that you really like.Why is it that you paint this.

I add the high lights to the eye of the bird. I use a paper clip that I have stighten and put a big dot of paint on the tip and just touch the eye of the bird. I find it easier to use a paper clip then a brush when I need just a touch of color.

As I finish up I add a loose feather in the foreground. I add a few seeds and a string for the little bird to build a nest with.

The finished painting has been done with just a few colors and I kept it very simple for nice stress free painting.

Sunset Egrets

Here is how I did this oil painting:

I started with a tinted panel in a pink because I wanted the undertones to be warm. I often use my leftover paint at the end of the day to undetone canvas. I hate to waste anything and it also gives me a good supply of dry toned canvas to use.

I do a quick sketch of where I want the egrets to be and place the horizon line high in the painting because it is about the birds and the water.

I put in the base color of the sky and water in a lemon yellow.

I add some blue to the foreground water which as I paint toward the Egrets become a wonderful shade of green as it mixes on the canvas with the lemon yellow.

At this point I step back and evaluate the strucker of the painting. It seems off balance to me so I take Q-tip and wipe out a spot in the water to add a fourth Egret.

I start putting more detil into the birds and darken the horizon line.

I begin adding the reflection of the birds in the water.

With a small rigger brush I add details. I build up the color of the water with a 1/2 in flat brush now.

I work a little more on it adding darker colors to the foreground.

Valentine Painting

I decided today that is was time to start a few Valentine Days Painting. This is the still life that I set up. My husband kept wandering into the studio today, I think it was because I had this Conversation Hearts Candy. I kept feeding them to him. It would not be Valentines Day for me with out them.

I sketched the set up on the panel. Today I am using a gessoed panel instead of my usual RayMar panel.

I paint in the background and the foreground.

I begin putting in the local color of the nail polish and the candy.

I keep build up the local colors add the pastel colors of the candy hearts. I add the color to the cap of the nail polish bottle.

I add the finishing touches to the painting.

Sunfish painted in oils

I sketch my ideas on paper then sketch them out on the canvas.

I add a little lemon yellow to the background and begin putting in the darker parts of the fish using a dark gray mix.

I put n the local color of the fish. I am using a base of gray for this fish.

I painted in the warm in the foreground of the painting using transparent red oxide.

I add more details to the fish. I begin putting in the eyes of the fish and more detail with the fins. I start to add the scales using a light shade,

I add more color to the fish, yellows and oranges and few sparkling highlights. I darken the background.

Cup with Pansies

I start with a yellow tinted canvas, then I draw a sketch of the cup and pot of flowers.

I mix purple and white for the back ground.

I paint the cup now that I have some background to help give it an environment.

I painted the clay pot using a mix of red iorn oxide, and cad orange. I use cad yellow for the sunlit area on the pot.

I add the flowers and greenery to the pot.

I add the details to the Pansie.

I decided to change the pansies. They seemed to be in a row and so I painted out a few of them. Thats the great thing about oil pinting you can always change things.

I started the orange painting on a toneed background of pink.

I start the base color of the shadowed side of the leaves on the orange.

I staart putting in some of the base color of the orange. I use lemon yellow,cad yellow med, and cad orange.

I add more color to the leaves and the stem of the orange.

I put the remaining base color of the orange in and I add the reflection of the orange. I add some purple to the back ground.

I work on the details a little more.

I add more puple to the background and finish the details.

I did a scketch of what I was planing on painting. I dont put much detail into this because I will paint over it.

I start painting in the base color.

I add more color to the manatee using burnt umber, red iron oxid and phthalo green,

I add the sky above the water using phthalo green, alizarian crimson and white.

I add the mangroves that the Manatee love to eat.

I begin to add the water,

I indicate the fish and add more shadows.

I add more color to the fish.

I add the weeds and stones to the bottom of the ocean. I add more detail and finish the painting.

I started todays painting on a 6x12 stretched canvas,

My palette get a little messy sometimes. I use the same limited setup on my palette each day.

I put an under painting down with phthalo blue at the bottom adding lemon yellow and white as I move to the top of the canvas. I then sketch in the sailfish with red iron oxide.

I put down some of the local color of the fish using phthalo blue and cad orange,

I add some dioxazine purple to the fine.

I work on some of the details of the fish.

Tropical Drama, painting palm trees

I keep a paper towel in my hand when I paint and wipe the brush when I change colors or make a heavy stroke of paint. I don't like to dip the brush in paint solvents because it muddies the color.

I mix a shadow color for the under fronds of the palm tree using phthalo blue, cad. yellow, and alizarin crimson.

I put the trunks in by pulling the brush staigh down in a vertical clean swipe using phthalo blue and red iron oxide.

I block in the general color of the palms with a mix of lemon yellow,cad yellow, phthalo blue and white.

I use a brighter green to add depth in the trees.

I add the sky color now.

I finish painting the general sky color.

I add high lights of red oxide,white,and cad yellow to the trees.

I add more paint build up the high lights and add more bright colors.

About this Painting: I like still life setups because it enables me to chose what aspect of the image shape,texture,color,relationship,light,design,and ambiguous forms. I get to play with the subject.

I started this painting several months ago. It is so small it should have been finished in a few hours. I put it up after I had established the apples general color and the still life set up.

I went on a trip and when I got back other things caught my interest, so this little guy set on the shelf. One of my New Years resolution is to finish those old soldiers that are gathering dust in the studio.

When I got to working at this, it seem dull and lifeless. Now I need to get inspired enough to finish the little guy. I wanted to make the colors glow so I added a little drama to the work. I thought that my whimsical bees might be just the supporting cast that this little drama might need.

I painted the background last night.I did a light sketch of the pears that I wanted to paint. I had sketched then out on paper last night to decide how I wanted the composition.

I mix yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, and a dot of white to paint the dark areas of the pears.

I add lemon yellow to the dark yellow ochre mix and paint the general color of the pears.

The far pear in the backround I add a little alizarion crimson to the mix to darken it.

I add more detail and the steams.

I add a little lemon yellow for high lights.

I add the shadows and the reflections of the pears.

I start the painting by sketching in the pike.

I start to paint the deep water with a mix of phthalo blue,alizarin crimson, and small dot of cad yellow.

I add more cad yellow to the mix to paint the lighter water.

I begin painting the pike. I start the under painting with dioxazine purple and white.

I add more color to the pike and paint the rocks at the bottom.

I add some more detail.

I add some high lights and more detail.

I started with an under painting of Phthalo green,a touch of Phthalo blue, and white.

I did a quick sketch of the boats with transparent red oxide.

I started adding the sky color and a few indications of clouds.

I added a little Dioxazine purple to the bottom of the clouds and to the horizon line.

I painted an indication of the hills in the background and then started on the hulls of the boats.

I started playing with the color of the ocean in the foreground. I wanted it be a green color.

I added a little more Phthalo Blue to the water and began developing the boat reflections.

I add more motion to the foreground.

Then put in the mast and the rolled sails.

Making Way- sailboat

I started with a tinted canvas. This one is 7x5

I do a quick sketch in transparent red oxide.

I block in the sky color using white ultramarine blue and a touch of veridian green.

I paint the ocean color. Painting the dark water with phthalo blue.

I start painting the clouds. I use a thin lavendar mix for the underside. The clouds recede and become less intense.

I add the sail color and highlights of the water.

I put a few figures in the sailboat.

I work a little more on the clouds and the waves.

I work on the foreground.

I add a small amount of yellow to the clouds and the water.

Gold fish, Fish art

I started with a 6x6 stretched gallery wrapped canvas.

I tinted the canvas with a wash of phthalo blue.

I did a quick sketch in transparent red oxide.

I then start adding the darkest colors . My goal at this point is to block in the back ground because I want my fish to be able to melt back into the darkness of it.

I start adding pure color to establish the fish forms. White and Cad, Red to start. I will correct these colors later.

I add a little more lemon yellow to the top of the canvas to green up that area. I then add indigo to the bottom. I continue to develop the fish form.

I use a rich mixture of cad yellow and cad orange for highlights on the fish. I keep working on the fins of the fish.

I finish putting the last details on the painting.

I started the painting with a toned canvas.

I sketched the basic composition in with transparant red oxide. Iwanted to make sure that I had rom for the tail feathers.

I painted the sky with a mixture of phthalo blue and white.

I developed the background.

I develop the comb and throat feathers.

I add the forground color and the shadow of the rooster.

Using a large brush , I block in the darkest colors of the Rooster. I add the throat feathers. I use cad. orange and alizarin crimson.

I added some green to the tail feathers. I I add more details . I mix white and yellow ochre for the legs and feet.

I tweak a few of the small things

New Years Resolutions

About This Painting: Santa and the elves kick back and enjoy the sunshine, But it is a new year and time to get in shape for Christmas 2012. All those cookies have added a few pounds so a little muscle pumping on the beach is needed.

This is a 5x7 oil painting and painting it Alla Prima with so many figures was very difficult.

Today I started with a RayMar panel that is 8x10.

I tone the canvas with a wash of orange and transparent red oxide. I wipe most of the paint off with a paper towel and let it dry.

I mix a sketching mixture with dioxazine purple and red iron oxide. I establish the horizon line and put little dots where I want the end of my tree branchs to be. I block in some general shapes.

I finish blocking shapes. I create the palm tree shape.

I wipe out some of the high light areas on the palm tree and add the local color of the water. I use Ultamarine blue and add white as I get closer to the shore line. I begin painting the sand with a mix of orange and yellow. I add shodow with my sketching mix with more purple added to it.

I block in the cloud shapes.

I now block in the sky with Phthalo Blue and white. I darken the underside of the clouds with puple and add a little yellow to the water near the shore. I paint the sky cutting around the palm branches.

I begin paintng the dark areas of the Palm Leaves with a mixture of alizarin chrimson,transparant red oxide, and olive green.

I want the palm tree to be the area of focus so I dull down the clouds a little add high light to leaves of the tree and work a littl more on the trunk of the tree following the shape of the bark with my brush. I deepen the shadows under the tree and nearer the foreground of the painting.

Today I am working on a square 6x6 gallery wrapped stretched canvas. I have a series of fish on 6x6 canvas so I want to add a few more to the series.

I start with a rough sketch in red oxide.

This time I add the background color first because I want the fish to pop out at me and I will work both the background and fish my point of interest at the same time.

I start by adding the darks. I can't have lights until I have darks.

I put in some of the local color,

Now I start building up the color.

The fish needs a little reflected light which will come from the top and a small part from the bottom. I begin adding it.

I build up the color layers and add more detail.

I add accent colors and a few high lights.

Three Fish- SOLD

I did a very quick sketch of the fish and toned the back ground with yellow ochre.

This is a RayMar canvas panel that is 8x10. I almost always use RayMar panels for my daily paintings and all of my small work because of the high quality of the panels and the ease of storage.
I have started to add dark colors to the painting.

Now I start to add some of the local color

Adding more of the local color. When I paint fish I paint from my imagination so it takes me a while to get feel for just how I want the painting to flow.

Now I start to add some of the background color. I have decided that I just want color for the background no images such as rocks or weeds.

With some of the background in I start adjusting the color of the fish.

It's starting to look more like what I want but it still needs more detail.

I want the fish to have a little bit of an abstract quality to them.

I start with a blank untoned canvas.

I then sketch in the basic shapes with transparent red oxide.I just put in general shaped because I will be painting over this. I just added transparent red oxide to my palette about 4 months ago and I am in love with it.

Next I add the darks.

I fill in the background color and continue working the over all local color of the flowers.

I like the feel of the painting right here and I may do another one with this very simple design. But I am going to tfinish this painting alla prima today.

Now I add a little more detail.
