Marsh Melody for Art Prize 2012

I am busy working on this 4x8 foot painting and still trying to find time to squeeze in those small daily paintings that I love to do.

Sailing the Bid Blue

Sailing the Big Blue
Sailing the Big Blue, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting:

Oil Painting Tip
Avoid using linseed oil as a medium in whites and blues as it has a marked tendency to yellow, which is most notable with light colors. Pure oil is recommended for light colors .
Walnut Oils vs. Traditional Oils
If it is your desire to work simply and cleanly, walnut oil painting may be for you. If you prefer to continue to work in oils with solvents, by all means do so. During the Renaissance, artists did not go around extracting turpentine from pine trees (which is where turpentine comes from). They were simply left with their imagination and their colors. When they combined them with different oils, the two they found worked well were walnut and linseed oils. These Renaissance artists found that they preferred the walnut oils. What they didn't know was that many years later, the paintings made with linseed oil darkened and cracked. To be fair, though the paintings might have cracked because the fat over lean rule was not followed: simply put, this means always keep the leaner layers underneath the thicker layers of paint.

Let's get wild, Fish Art

Wild Fish No. 3
Wild Fish No. 3, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting: Gee whiz it's the end of the month already. I have been at the easel until all hours of the morning working on my large painting for ArtPrize 2012. My goal was to have Marsh Melodies  completed by the end of July. Where are those little worker elves when you need them? I guess the belong to the shoe workers union, because none have shown their pointie little hats in my studio this month.

I just had to have a little more fun with these abstract whimsical fun fish yesterday because all work and no play make Delilah a very grumpy artist.

Duck painting

Ducks
Ducks, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting: I have been painting lots of marsh animals this week as I work on my large 4x8 feet painting for ArtPrize 2012. I had hoped to have it finished by the 30th but I still have more work to do. I have been paintings a few studies of marsh animals trying to decide which one will work best in the painting. I gave this mallard duck a try but I think I will use a male in the painting because I want the nice green colored head or maybe a small wood duck.

Summer Trees Painted with a palette knife

Summer Trees
Summer Trees, painting by Delilah Smith
About This Painting: This is a painting done with painters painting knifes. Here are what a few of them look like.
Different knife blades

Achieving a thick texture that is rich in color, blending, building surface texture, edging, detailing and scraping off layers of paint are the main goals of palette knife painting.

Vincent van Gogh used his palette knife painting to capture and convey raw emotion. His immediate sweeps of swirling concentrated colors applied with thickened paints continue to capture the imagination of museum-goers worldwide. Palette knife painting works best with impasto painting, or with thickened paint. I like to work wet into wet when I use a palette knife and do a lot of blending right on the painting.
